Aquatic Ecology

January 13, 2026 by

For more than 50 years, aquatic ecology has been at the core of what we do. Our team of biologists, hydrologists, water resource engineers, and regulatory experts provide the integrated expertise to successfully implement all aspects of assessment, protection, and offsetting in lakes, rivers, estuaries, and the ocean.

Our capabilities include:

  • Aquatic resource baseline characterization and impact determinations in support of provincial and federal/national environmental assessments and permitting.
  • Habitat offsetting design and effectiveness monitoring.
  • Instream and environmental flow needs assessments.
  • Aquatic bioindicator assessments, including benthic and planktonic invertebrates, algae and macrophytes, and fish health and community endpoints.
  • Fish population assessments using genetic analysis, sonar surveys, and mark-recapture techniques.
  • In-house dive team, vessels, and equipment to safely deliver a wide range of aquatic surveys.
  • Habitat mapping using drone and satellite image analysis and ground-truthing techniques.
  • Tissue contaminant monitoring in support of ecological and human health risk assessments, including metals and hydrocarbons.
  • Marine mammal and fish monitoring for infrastructure construction and operations.

Our specialists are leaders in the understanding and interpretation of legislation, regulation, and guidance related to aquatic habitat to ensure we effectively manage client risks and deliver regulatory compliance.

Why Hatfield?

We are recognised as an industry leader in aquatic ecology. Our team integrates a thorough knowledge of freshwater and marine science with a passion for protecting and restoring aquatic ecosystems in tropical, temperate, and arctic environments. With experts in fish, fish habitat and marine mammal ecology, water resources, toxicology environmental assessments and permitting, our team combines hands-on field experience with cutting-edge science to deliver large aquatic field programs safely and efficiently. We bring extensive experience providing sound strategic advice to a wide range of clients, in Canada and Indonesia, and internationally, while supporting them in navigating complex regulatory processes.
