Background:
The Kubu Peatland Project (KPP) is an Avoided Planned Deforestation (APD) and Avoided Planned Wetland Degradation (APWD) project that seeks to protect 20,380 hectares (ha) of peatland ecosystem on the PT Menggala Rambu Utama (MRU) concession in West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The KPP objectives are to conserve the ecological functions of the peatland and avoid conversion of natural forests to an industrial tree plantation by using sustainable land-use models that benefit critically endangered biodiversity and provide benefits for local communities.
The KPP is implementing a carbon project by following a voluntary carbon market (VCM) mechanism.
