With the summer nearing an end, we have many new faces who have joined our Canadian team over the past few months! Recruiting dynamic individuals with a wide variety of expertise and backgrounds is important to us, and results in a strong and skilled team. A warm welcome to everyone joining Hatfield throughout western Canada.
Joining our team in Vancouver:
Victoria Hanna, BA Creative Industries, joins our Infrastructure and Environmental Management Group as Environmental Technician. Environmental consulting is in Victoria’s blood. That, along with her strong writing, public relations and communications background makes her a great addition to the Hatfield team. Victoria has experience creating and managing the proposal process as a project coordinator. She also has experience managing budgets, timelines, presentations, fact sheets, backgrounders, and press releases.
Quan Cui, PhD Environmental Science, joins our Water Resources Group as Environmental Information Specialist. Quan has a strong academic background in environmental engineering, with over 10 years’ experience in environmental data. She has extensive research experience in Alberta, trained in groundwater modelling and GIS-based modelling. She is very proficient with novel statistical modelling such as machine learning modelling, and data science programming skills including data visualization.
Jonathan Trueblood, PhD Atmospheric and Physical Chemistry, joins our Environmental Assessment and Monitoring Group as Environmental Information Specialist. Jonathan has a background in environmental chemistry, statistics, and programming. It’s not often that someone’s passion closely follows their PhD and associated research like Jonathan’s has. Both his PhD in atmospheric chemistry and his postdoctoral research at New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research(NIWA) were focused on the interplay between the water quality/primary productivity of the ocean and the chemistry of resulting sea spray aerosols that are emitted when waves break.
Joining our team in Calgary:
Alex Cassidy, BSc Geology, joins Hatfield’s Water Resources Group as a Hydrogeologist. Alex’s career initially started in exploration geology and evolved into physical hydrogeology. For the last 8 years, Alex has focused on hydrogeologic fieldwork including in-situ testing for hydraulic conductivity and stress determination, as well as grout programs to reduce water inflow and geotechnical fieldwork consisting of detailed core logging of structural and geological features. He has also been responsible for data management and analysis of hydraulic testing data; stress analysis and 3D modelling.
Steven Griffeth, BSc Environmental Science joins our Calgary office as Environmental Specialist. Steven is a Professional Biologist with experience working in environmental consulting, government, and for the Alberta Conservation Association. He has experience collecting baseline aquatic data and writing reports including spawning and fish habitat assessments, fish collection using a variety of methods including backpack and tote electrofishing, minnow trapping, and seining. In addition, Steven has environmental monitoring experience protecting aquatic ecosystems during instream work.
Anne Hafner, BA Applied Technology Geographic Information Systems, joins our Geomatics Group as Geomatics Technician. Anne is a recent graduate with a concrete background in geographic and cartographic principles. She has had the opportunity to apply her skills through an internship with an international energy company supporting projects in spatial analysis, creating web map applications, and working with provincial, federal, and corporate data sets. She is very proficient with her use of many different software packages and python scripting.
Joining our team in Fort McMurray:
Race Houston, BSc Geology, joins our Water Resources Group as Water Resource Technician, with a solid research background in hydrogeology. For his Bachelor’s degree, he did an independent research project on the Crystal Geyser in Utah where he constructed a flood barrier and weir around the geyser to collect discharge measurements and analyze and model the eruptions. As a student researcher, Race reviewed and modified over 280 igneous and metamorphic petrology activities in Alberta, as well as mapped reefs and carbonates in the Bahamas.
Stephanie Biegel, BA Environmental Geography, joins our Infrastructure and Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Group as Environmental Technician. Stephanie’s environmental career began as a lab technician where she was responsible for preparing and analyzing samples. Her career grew into a field technician specializing in water quality sampling and monitoring.
Jordan Hamm, BSc Natural Science, joins Hatfield as Environmental Technician. Jordan is a new graduate and has had the opportunity to spend two co-op terms in industry. During Jordan’s first summer co-op, she was responsible for supporting logistics and general office administration. In her second co-op term she was in the field collecting surface and groundwater samples and managed a network of weather stations.
John Diiwu, PhD Water Resource Engineering, joins our Water Resources Group as Senior Water Resource Engineer. John is highly accomplished in the field of hydrology and hydraulics with over 15 years’ experience in stormwater management, transportation, municipal drainage systems, watercourse crossing design, river channel enhancement, and flood and erosion control systems. He is an experienced hydrologist and author of technical papers on natural resource management, focusing on emerging issues in Canada and globally.
Coralee Schmidt, BSc Geography and Environmental Studies, will be supporting both the Infrastructure and Environmental Management Group, as well as the Environmental Management and Assessment Group, as Environmental Technician. She comes to Hatfield with a solid background in fieldwork including assisting with drone surveys. Coralee also has been the Lead Cold Saltwater Biologist at the Vancouver Aquarium responsible for the daily husbandry, maintenance, cleaning and feeding, and as a Divemaster and First Responder to diver emergencies on site.
Levi Vatamaniuk, Diploma Environmental Engineering Technology, joins our Water Resources Group as Water Resources Specialist. Levi has a background in hydrogeology and hydrology, and 5 years of experience performing a mix of geotechnical, civil materials, and environmental testing for civil construction projects. He has worked on projects in oil & gas, mining, and infrastructure. Levi has a solid background in environmental monitoring, environmental management and environmental protections planning
Carter Mazerolle, BSc Physical Geography, joins our Water Resources Group as Junior Hydrologist. Carter is a recent graduate, and while attending school, worked as a research technician responsible for the calibration and verification of oceanographic research equipment tracking water parameters such as temperature, depth, salinity, dissolved gases, pH, etc. For his Honours undergrad thesis, Carter studied the phytoplankton community population in the Trent-Severn Waterway where he collected, analyzed, and classified phytoplankton community composition from a variety of sample sites to determine trends in water chemistry.
Shaylea Connors-AuCoin, BSc Biology, joins our Environmental Infrastructure Group as Environmental Technician. Through both her career and internships, Shaylea has had the opportunity to work onsite at two of the major oil producers in Fort McMurray. Shaylea did two internships in Research and Development, initially collecting soil, tailing, and water samples in her first internship, and groundwater, erosion monitoring, and aquatics sampling in her second internship. Most recently Shaylea has been involved with groundwater and surface water sampling, regulatory compliance monitoring, and mentoring and training junior technicians.
