Hatfield presents carbon market services at the ‘Living Planet Symposium’ in Norway

Jul 06, 2010

Thomas Boivin, President of Hatfield, presented the results of the Earth Observation Services for Forest Carbon Emissions (EO-FORCE) project at the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Living Planet Symposium in Bergen, Norway on June 29th, 2010.

Hatfield’s paper and presentation, entitled “Monitoring Indonesian Forest Management In Support Of Sustainable Forestry And Carbon Emissions Reductions” was featured in the Forestry & Biomass session.

With support from ESA, the EO-FORCE project is delivering baseline and monitoring services for Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) projects for the voluntary carbon market in Indonesia. Forest carbon projects provide an exciting opportunity to use optical and radar satellite remote sensing and data, which are integrated with carbon stock assessment and land cover change modelling. The EO-FORCE project is being conducted with Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Indonesia Program in North Sulawesi Province, WWF Indonesia, and PT Sumalindo Lestari Jaya Tbk, a forestry company in East Kalimantan Province.

Hatfield (Canada and Indonesia) are developing remote sensing and forestry services in association with NEO B.V. (Netherlands). EcoSecurities and SGS are providing guidance on the role of EO-based products and services for the voluntary carbon market and the development of international standards.
