Hatfield selected as WWF-Canada Nature x Carbon Tech Challenge Finalist

May 19, 2022

Hatfield is proud to be one of five finalists selected as part of the WWF Nature x Carbon Tech Challenge for our technology arboSense – an advanced machine learning technology used to estimate forest canopy height and above-ground biomass (AGB).

The WWF-Canada Nature x Carbon Tech Challenge looks for cost-effective and innovative new technologies that support community-led carbon measurements for nature-based climate solutions in Canada. The purpose of this challenge is to face some of the major environmental issues in Canada head-on, including biodiversity loss and climate change. Through the creation and use of new technologies aimed at assessing and monitoring our carbon-rich ecosystems, we support protection and restoration and the development of nature-based carbon solutions to climate change and allowing biodiversity to thrive.

Hatfield’s solution, arboSense, was designed to provide a cost-effective and accurate method to estimate forest canopy height over large areas periodically, as a key parameter used to calculate AGB and carbon. Developed in our GEO Analytics Canada cloud platform, the technology leverages multiple sources of freely available remote sensing data and a state-of-the-art machine learning algorithm to produce forest canopy height estimates which can be used to estimate AGB. These measurements allow us to better understand long-term carbon balance in forest ecosystems, which are a critical reservoir of terrestrial carbon. Under the Nature x Carbon Tech Challenge, Hatfield will refine and validate the arboSense modelling and test the solution with users.

At Hatfield, our mission is to advance sustainable development that supports thriving ecosystems and communities in all the work we do, both in Canada and internationally. Therefore, we are thrilled to have been chosen as a finalist for the Nature x Carbon Tech Challenge. As Canada takes bold actions towards net zero emissions by 2050, we are ready to leverage our technological solutions in partnership with the Nature X Carbon Tech challenge, and support biodiversity and climate change mitigation in the years to come.
