Effects Monitoring & Ecotoxicology

April 6, 2020 by

Hatfield is a global leader in the study of aquatic effects of industrial and municipal effluents and the development of acceptable water quality thresholds for aquatic receiving environments. Our diverse range of effects monitoring and ecotoxicology services include:

  • Design and implementation of federal Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) and provincial Aquatic Environmental Effects Monitoring programs (AEMP) to assess effluents effects from metal and coal mines, pulp and paper mills, oil sands facilities, and municipal wastewater treatment plants;
  • Developing site-specific water quality thresholds for metals and ions in aquatic environments, using toxicity-based methods and a range of natural variability assessments, with meaningful consideration of the perspectives of local communities and regulators;
  • Toxicity Identification Evaluations (TIE) that assess specific constituents of industrial effluents that may cause environmental degradation;
  • State-of-the-environment assessments including compilation and statistical analysis of historical monitoring results; and
  • Quantitative risk assessments of contaminants in the environment.

Why Hatfield?

Hatfield’s experienced multi-disciplinary team has expertise in diverse areas of aquatic environmental science and monitoring. Our staff have been heavily involved in the development and implementation of federal EEM programs for the pulp and paper and metal-mining sectors since the 1990s; we implement the majority of such EEMs in Western Canada today, in addition to managing numerous discharge-specific and regional monitoring programs associated with coal mines, oil sands facilities, and municipal wastewater treatment plants. We have designed and implemented similar programs internationally, in Southeast Asia and elsewhere, and have advised international clients on effective and efficient monitoring program design.
