Hatfield is seeking a Water Resources Information Specialist to support our Water Resource Group. In this role, you will support a wide range of data-driven activities, including data analysis, information management, digital tool development and documentation for Hatfield’s water resource-related projects. This position will be based in one of Hatfield’s Canadian offices (i.e., Vancouver, Terrace, Calgary or Fort McMurray).
The ideal candidate will have scientific training in at least one of hydrology, hydrogeology, climatology, or geochemistry, and experience with hydroclimatic time series analysis, analysis of water quality datasets, geospatial analyses, modelling, and R. Strong communication skills and the ability to understand our unique technical and data-communications needs are also important in this position. This role has considerable scope for career development and advancement, and over time, you will support or lead the training of colleagues in reproducible data science.
Responsibilities
- Lead or support water quantity and/or quality data management and analysis components of assigned projects. You may also be asked to support data management and analysis for other environmental attributes.
- Perform automated data quality assurance/quality control (QAQC) checks for large datasets and undertake data screening, analysis, calculations, and interpretation, and/or develop project specific tools to complete these tasks.
- Support the planning, development, and expansion of in-house data analytics software and processes.
- Create and/or update internal R packages and R Shiny Apps used by staff scientists. Synthesize functional needs from multiple projects and identify overlapping use cases where general purpose scripts and packages could eliminate redundancy.
- Develop and update R-based microservices for our web-based environmental data management software “EnviroData”. This includes expanding the functionality of the EnviroDataR package (https://docs.envirodata.io/edr/index.html).
- Support the development of training resources and documentation. Provide support and/or guidance to project teams on data-driven science processes and tools.
- Provide technical support for clients and Hatfield staff using our in-house environmental data management systems, especially Hatfield’s EnviroData (envirodata.io) and Aquarius time series systems.
- Contribute to proposal and project management. Assigned tasks may include identification of business opportunities, development of proposed approaches and cost estimates for data analytics-related scopes, provision of written content, and coordination of tasks and budget management.
Education and Experience
- B.Sc or higher in a science or engineering field with some prior coursework, training and/or experience related to mathematics / statistics, data science, computer science, and hydrology / hydrogeology / water quality. Experience with water resource management / monitoring projects and the analysis of associated datasets (such as water quantity, water quality, climate datasets, etc.).
- Advanced knowledge of R. Should be familiar with base R packages as well as tidyverse, ggplot2, and devtools. Experience with other data management and visualization tools (e.g. Aquarius, Shiny Apps, PowerBI, Excel, Markdown etc) is also advantageous.
Other Assets/Skills
- Ability to follow software development best practices, such as unit tests, documentation, version control, and compliance with style guides. Experience with GNU/Linux, Docker, and CI/CD workflows are also advantageous.
