National Survey of Aerial Bomb and Cluster Munitions

Client:

Cambodia Mine Action Centre

Location:

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Dates:

January 2024 – Ongoing

Background:

The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) is Cambodia’s leading demining organization, focused on the areas of Survey and Land Release, Mine and Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Clearance, Mine and UXO Risk Education and Training, and Research and Development. Employing staff across Cambodia, CMAC passionately works towards the ongoing mission of “Saving Lives and Supporting Development for Cambodia”.

CMAC’s objective is to conduct a National Survey of Aerial Bomb and Cluster Munitions to address historical conflict impacts on the present-day life of Cambodian citizens. As part of its national strategy to eradicate landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), Cambodia plans to announce a Landmine Free status by the end of 2025. Once achieved, CMAC must adjust its current national strategy to concentrate on addressing the remaining ERW, which continue to pose a threat to the safety of Cambodians and their communities. To establish a path forward, CMAC intends to conduct a National Survey of the war legacy of aerial bombs and cluster munitions that contaminate vast areas and create a high-risk environment for the Cambodian people. This survey is intended to develop a clear understanding of the extent of aerial bombs and cluster munitions in Cambodia and their ongoing impacts on people and communities.

Services Provided:

Hatfield is providing technical assistance to CMAC, as part of an 18-month contract in support of a National Aerial Bomb and Cluster Munitions Survey. Hatfield’s role includes working with CMAC on National Survey field operations, baseline data collection methodology, war records research, field/baseline data verification assessments, and National Survey report preparation. The National Survey will dovetail with the development of a 10-Year Clearance Strategy to address the war legacy of aerial bombs and cluster munitions across the Kingdom of Cambodia.
