Background
The Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) wanted to develop a guidance document to help GEF Agencies, in-country partners, and practitioners to mainstream geospatial information, particularly satellite Earth observation (EO) data, in developing, implementing and monitoring GEF programs and projects.
Services Provided
Hatfield’s EO expert led the development of two new EO publications in close collaboration with the STAP. This included developing:
- a scientific primer on geospatial concepts, including EO, to improve the understanding of these concepts, how they can be deployed in projects of relevance to the GEF, and to encourage their uptake in GEF-7 projects and programs.
- guidance to help project managers fulfill the requirements when completing Project Information Forms as part of GEF funding proposals.
- signposting of geospatial data sets, data products, platforms and tools that are relevant to GEF-7 investments, with a focus on GEF-7 programming and performance indicators.
- recommendations to the GEF on how to mainstream EO technology to maximize global environmental benefits and enhance knowledge management.
The publication titled, “Earth Observation and the Global Environment Facility – Technical Guide,” provides an overview of EO technology for the GEF, and includes an overview of optical, radar, LiDAR, and drone technologies; use cases from around the world and across the major themes and impact areas of GEF programming; and links to useful data and information resources, software tools, and cloud platforms.
