An Intersectional Analysis of Ocean Sectors in British Columbia
Client:
Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship
Location:
British Columbia, Canada
Dates:
July 2023 – April 2024
Background:
The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship hired Hatfield to review and describe the representation of different equity-deserving populations in BC across ten ocean industry sectors on the north coast, south coast, and Vancouver Island. Sectors examined included the seafood sector, marine transportation, port construction, and marine tourism. We used a combination of document review, Canada census data, and key informant interviews to develop profiles of each ocean industry sector. These profiles summarized various barriers or adverse experiences equity-deserving groups face in participating or trying to participate in different sectors.
Services Provided:
Hatfield is the lead consultant on the project, responsible for carrying out quantitative data and literature reviews, coordinating and conducting interviews of key ocean industry sector informants, and applying a GBA Plus lens to evaluate the benefits and impacts of Ministry policy recommendations on equity-deserving groups participating in BC ocean industries. Hatfield produced deliverables within a restricted timeframe. Results of the study were presented by the client at the January 2024 Salish Sea Strategy Symposium hosted by Transport Canada.
