Background
States affected by fragility, conflict or violence face growing threats to state security, their economy, and to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Major challenges such as a turbulent economy, surges of violence, environmental degradation, and climate change are causes of human insecurity. The European Space Agency (ESA) Earth Observation for Sustainable Development (EO4SD) Fragility, Conflict and Security initiative aimed to mainstream the use of Earth observation (EO) products and services in the development investments by international finance institutions (IFI). The goal was to provide meaningful support that would contribute to an increase in both environmental and human security in states affected by fragility, conflict, or violence.
Services Provided
Hatfield was a member of a consortium delivering EO services to address needs and projects identified through discussions with the IFIs. Hatfield was responsible for the coordination and engagement of local and regional stakeholders for the Latin American and Caribbean region.
Demonstration services provided by Hatfield included mapping and monitoring of savanna wetlands in the Orinoquia region of Colombia, rapid technical investigation of impacts from the desert locust upsurge in eastern Ethiopia, and an assessment of EO data to support cadastral mapping in Colombia.
Hatfield was also involved in capacity building and training, including conducting a training workshop with a range of government agencies in Colombia.
