Mekong River Commission launches new website
Oct 21, 2011
On October 17, 2011, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) launched a new website developed by Hatfield Consultants’ offices in Indonesia and Vancouver: http://www.mrcmekong.org.
MRC Portal
The updated website was designed to provide an integrated solution to MRC communication and information management, with a user-friendly design and updated content based on identified priorities within the basin. Technical improvements resulting from the project included a re-structured navigation system, improved search capabilities, document management system for MRC publications, and stakeholder engagement tools, which were developed to improve usability. The website was developed using the Silverstripe open source content management system and framework.
MRC Website
Content development processes were driven by the needs of the users, which were identified through a user needs assessment. In addition, the MRC’s Communications Specialists played an important role to ensure that MRC’s communication goals were achieved. One important theme that emerged was the impact of climate change in the Lower Mekong River Basin, since the basin is among the most vulnerable locations in the world with respect to climate change. Critical environmental concerns were extracted from scientific reports and presented in a format suitable for a wide audience using a variety of media.
The MRC website links to the MRC Data and Information Services Portal, also developed by Hatfield, which provides a summary of MRC’s services and enables direct access to real time information, spatial and time-series data, and a Master Catalogue. The site can be accessed at: http://portal.mrcmekong.org.
Since 1998, Hatfield has supported the MRC in implementing a wide range of programs from decision support tools to remote sensing applications and institutional strengthening initiatives.
