Hatfield releases first open source software project

Dec 06, 2010

Hatfield recently released its first open source software project. The project, called “HatCMS” is a website content management system designed to allow for easily creation, modification, and maintenance of websites.

HatCMS is a web application that allows website content to be created and edited by non-technical users. HatCMS was designed to make it as easy as possible for non-technical users to add and update content on websites irrespective of geographical location. The user-interface presented by HatCMS allows for web-content to be edited in-place, and “hides” most technical details (such as template creation) from authors. As such, authors can focus on content creation, rather than on the actual website design, which is typically handled by web-design experts.

Development of HatCMS has been sponsored by Hatfield since 2006, with implementation handled by the Environmental Information Systems team. HatCMS has been implemented for multiple websites, most notably:

  • Hatfield Consultant’s website (www.hatfieldgroup.com)
  • The Orange-Senqu River Awareness Kit (www.orangesenqurak.com)
  • The Limpopo River Awareness Kit (www.limpoporak.com)
  • The Orange-Senqu River Commission (www.orasecom.org)
  • The Regional Aquatics Monitoring Program (www.ramp-alberta.org)

Key features of HatCMS include:

  • Simple, easy to use authoring environment
  • Multi-lingual capabilities
  • Runs on Linux, Mac and Windows (via Microsoft.Net and Novell’s Mono Framework)
  • Uses the MySQL database engine
  • Templates are defined per-page allowing for customized page display
  • templates use MasterPage inspired nesting allowing for pages to be rendered consistently
  • Open-source – licensed under the Mozilla Public License (MPL v1.1)
