Hatfield conducts water quality monitoring at Suncor Fort Hills settling ponds
Nov 20, 2012
In 2002, Suncor Energy Inc. received approval to develop the Fort Hills integrated oil sands mining project, being developed in partnership with Teck Resources Ltd. and Total E&P Canada.
The Fort Hills lease covers an area of 239 km2 and is located 90 km north of the city of Fort McMurray. The Fort Hills lease has the capacity for a multi-phase development, which is expected to yield a total of approximately 3.4 billion barrels of bitumen.
Settling ponds have been established throughout the Fort Hills lease to remove sediments from water prior to the release of the water back into natural waterbodies. Monitoring of the settling ponds is required by Alberta Environment to ensure that site water discharges remain within acceptable water quality limits. Hatfield is conducting this monitoring for Suncor, with the monitoring program consisting of water quality sampling, analysis, and reporting three times per week at all Fort Hills Project settling ponds. Monitoring is scheduled to be conducted until the 3rd quarter of 2013.
