Finalist for the 2004 Canadian Awards for International Cooperation
May 14, 2004
Hatfield Consultants Ltd. (Hatfield) and the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRC) were finalists for the 2004 Canadian Awards for International Cooperation, recognizing achievements in supporting sustainable development and social programs to reduce poverty in developing countries. Hatfield and the MRC received the runner-up designation for the Mark Drake Award Recognizing Excellence in Communicating International Cooperation Issues for the project entitled Mekong River Awareness Kit or RAK. The RAK project was developed under the Environmental Training Programme Block II (ETP Block II) of the Environment Programme of the MRC from January 2002 to February 2003.
The RAK provided a unique opportunity to communicate environmental awareness issues to the people of the Greater Mekong Region, and to help protect one of the great rivers of the world. The overall objective of the RAK project was to promote a better understanding of Mekong River science issues, in an interactive and user-friendly format. Project activities included the development of the Mekong River Awareness Kit interactive CD-ROM, a project website, Internet Discussion Board, a 3-month self-study period, and a series of demonstration and evaluation workshops.
The RAK project contributed to poverty reduction through providing education, supporting improved environmental management, and promoting enhanced governance. Over 75 participants from developing countries received direct training on river ecology and environmental awareness, and the project helped promote a holistic view of rivers and human’s impacts on sensitive ecosystems.
