Nizar Zulkarnaen is a forestry specialist and leader with over a decade of experience in natural resource management. His areas of specialization include natural resources investment due diligence, carbon project assessments, high conservation value assessments, sustainable commodity certification, environmental baseline and impact assessments, regional planning, and soil surveys. Nizar has experience working in various sectors including international and regional development, mining, renewable energy and natural resources commodities such as forestry, oil palm and cacao.
Nizar has led and contributed to key sustainability initiatives, including Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community, and Biodiversity (CCB) projects, overseeing the development of feasibility studies, project description documents and monitoring reports. As a Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) practitioner, he has conducted High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS) assessments and several due diligence assignments for responsible palm oil certification. His experience in regional planning includes assisting government agencies in developing green growth plans, investment road maps and low-carbon development initiatives. Additionally, he has played a key role in the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Remedy Framework, conducting environmental baseline assessments in support of responsible forestry practices.
As Leader for the Natural Resources and Planning Group and member of the Board of Directors at PT Hatfield Indonesia, Nizar oversees project management, field surveys, and stakeholder and client engagement for initiatives related to natural resource certification, sustainable land use, and carbon market mechanisms.
