PT Hatfield Indonesia launches new services to assist Indonesian shrimp farmers achieve Aquaculture Stewardship Council Certification

Sep 22, 2019

PT Hatfield Indonesia (PTHI) is pleased to announce new services to support the certification of shrimp farms under the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standards. These are  internationally recognized as the highest level of assessment for responsible aquaculture. To address this increasingly important certification, PTHI combines its longstanding experience conducting high-quality Biodiversity Environmental Impact Assessments and Participatory Social Impact Assessments with our expertise on productive aquaculture management, ASC shrimp standards, and relevant Indonesian regulations.

Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food production sector globally, with production projected to double within the next 15 to 20 years. Future growth of the aquaculture industry is essential to provide sustainable supplies of fish and shrimp to national, regional, and global seafood systems, and ensure that fish and shrimp are affordable for resource-poor consumers. Well-managed aquaculture facilities are a potentially efficient method of protein production with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, low freshwater requirements, and minimal use of land compared to other forms of livestock production. In addition, aquaculture can provide economic opportunities in coastal communities that have few alternatives.

Based on the above, PTHI has developed a low-cost, data-focused assessment approach to help companies and farmers understand impacts of their operations on biodiversity, environmental, and social economic conditions. Through this process, PTHI helps companies and farmers develop cost-effective management plans that are customized to the size and specifics of each farm. Our staff have extensive scientific and management expertise to ensure environmental projects are completed cost-effectively, on time, and to the highest technical standards. By following a client-focused approach, PTHI provides high-quality assessments that support tangible benefits for operators, the environment, and local communities.

PTHI can work with any company or farmer group that wants to pursue profitable, cost-effective, and sustainable shrimp farming in Indonesia. PTHI is proud to help operators pursue certification under the ASC shrimp standards and improve market access for Indonesian shrimp.
