Hatfield Indonesia provides technical support for a “Training of Trainers” program on strategic environmental assessments

Dec 11, 2017

A Training of Trainers (TOT) program for Environmental Research Centers within Indonesia’s Kalimantan Region was conducted by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) with technical support from Hatfield Indonesia. Additional cooperating partners included the Directorate of Prevention of Environmental Impact Regional and Sector Policy (Direktorat Pencegahan Dampak Lingkungan, Kebijakan Wilayah dan Sektor – PDLKWS), Ministry of Environment and Forestry and Bureau of Centre for Environmental Studies Collaboration (Badan Kerjasama Pusat Studi Lingkungan – BKPSL). The training took place in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Province, and was held over four days from 30 October to 2 November, 2017. Participants came from the following five major universities within Kalimantan: University of Lambung Mangkurat, University of Mulawarman, University of Tanjungpura, University of Palangka Raya, and University of Borneo Tarakan.

Objectives of the TOT program were: (1) Improve knowledge and skills for conducting Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) in the respective provinces; (2) Better integrate SEA technical recommendations with provincial- and district-level policies, plans and programs (PPP); (3) Improve existing training modules with specific case studies from the Kalimantan ecoregion, including additional analytical tools such as extended cost-benefit analysis (eCBA) and spatial modeling analysis of multi-objective land allocation (MOLA); and (4) Improve coordination between central and provincial governments through Environmental Research Centers and universities to facilitate better integration of SEA recommendations into regional development plans.

In collaboration with GGGI, Hatfield Indonesia provided program design, facilitation, and implementation of the TOT program. In addition, Hatfield personnel delivered training materials based on their subject matter expertise.
