PT Hatfield Indonesia and WWF collaborate to develop sustainable tourism in the Coral Triangle

Oct 05, 2017

Over the last two years PT Hatfield Indonesia has worked closely with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to support their Coral Triangle program “Developing and Promoting Sustainable Nature-Based Tourism in the Coral Triangle“. The goal of the project is to facilitate development of long-term approaches in support of sustainable, nature-based tourism within the six countries forming the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF).

A business case for nature-based tourism was developed based on a preliminary baseline assessment, followed by comparing the return on investment for mass tourism versus nature-based tourism. The studies demonstrated that the Coral Triangle has many of the required ingredients for successfully supporting a market for nature-based and adventure tourism. The project has completed destination plans for three sites within the Coral Triangle:

  • Western Province, Solomon Islands;
  • Ataúro Island, Timor-Leste; and
  • Kimbe Bay and surrounds, West New Britain, Papua New Guinea.

In addition, an investment prospectus for the three sites was produced which is designed to attract investment consistent with the priorities recommended in the destination plans. PT Hatfield Indonesia and WWF are confident these products will be an important resource for government authorities, the tourism sector, development partners, and communities wanting to engage in a form of tourism that encourages protection and management of marine ecosystems. Preserving these ecosystems is vital to the food security and livelihoods of coastal communities in the Coral Triangle.
