Hatfield supports Copper Mountain Mine EEM
Oct 15, 2011
Hatfield is has been contracted to support Copper Mountain Mine with its monitoring and management of fisheries and aquatic resources. The 2012 aquatics monitoring will consist of the following components: a benthic community survey, fish health and population assessments, fish habitat assessments and sediment quality assessments.
Copper Mountain Mine (BC) Ltd. (CMM) operates this copper-gold-silver mine near the town of Princeton, BC, at a site that formerly operated as an underground mine from 1927 to 1957, and an open-pit mine (the Similco mine) from 1972 to 1996. Site drainage from the mine property affects Wolfe Creek, which drains via a series of lakes and creek sections to the Similkameen River, downstream of Princeton.
CMM must comply with specific environment monitoring requirements stipulated by the BC Ministry of Environment (BCMOE) as well as by the federal Metal Mining Effluent Regulations (MMER) of the Fisheries Act. In addition to stipulating water quality monitoring, the MMER also requires the aquatic Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) studies of biological communities potentially affected by mine activities.
