Hatfield is seeking a full-time, experienced, and technically strong Aquatic Environmental Specialist to become part of our dynamic Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (EMA) team in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The successful candidate will provide technical support and assistance for the environmental permitting, assessment, and monitoring of industrial projects in Alberta. Duties will consist of organizing and implementing required environmental assessment and monitoring programs, including study design, statistical analysis and reporting, and ensuring environmental compliance of project activities with all relevant local, provincial, and federal environmental regulations. The successful candidate will possess scientific expertise and experience in effects monitoring and assessment within aquatic ecosystems, including fish populations and fish heath. Responsibilities:
- Work with interdisciplinary teams of environmental specialists and technicians to effectively deliver environmental assessment programs in conformance with local, provincial, and federal regulations.
- Participate in and lead aquatic assessments using fish populations (with emphasis on monitoring bioindicators that reflect fish health), lower trophic communities, as well as water and sediment chemistry.
- Organize and implement aquatic baseline assessments, operational and compliance monitoring programs, and aquatic impact assessments, including study design, data analysis, and reporting.
- Compile, manage, and interpret environmental data.
- Compose technical reports.
- Provide technical assistance on proposal development, project scheduling, and budget management activities.
- Ensure compliance with Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan, the law, and client health and safety protocols, as well as compliance with Hatfield’s Quality Management Plan and external requirements and regulations.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of an undergraduate degree in a relevant environmental discipline (environmental science, natural resources management, aquatic ecology, fisheries, etc.) and a relevant professional designation in Alberta, or eligibility to apply.
- Minimum of five years of progressive work experience leading environmental studies, preferably in a professional consulting context.
- Experience and success working in large, multi-disciplinary teams is essential.
- Experience working with a range of environmental disciplines (wetlands, vegetation, fish and fish habitat) is an asset.
Other Assets/Skills:
- Working knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation.
- Appropriate qualifications for work in Alberta and British Columbia, and a valid Canadian driver’s license.
- Ability and interest to undertake extensive fieldwork, in a range of weather conditions, including working in remote locations and on programs that may require camp stays.
- Ability to work independently or in teams of technicians with varying levels of experience and maintain a positive attitude.
- Ability and interest to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork, and an ability and interest to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations.
- Demonstrated technical competency and knowledge of freshwater and/or marine ecology.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written – technical or scientific writing) including an ability to communicate professionally with clients.
- Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation, and analysis) with a demonstrated ability to consistently apply high standards of scientific rigour to projects and deliverables.
- Project management skills, including verbal and written communication, technical reporting, budget tracking, and team development.
- Motivated self-starter with a positive attitude and a desire to take on greater responsibility and authority with increasing experience.
