GeoEye/Ikonos

Overview

GeoEye-1

GeoEye-1—the world's highest resolution commercial earth-imaging satellite, was launched on September 6th 2008. Equipped with the most sophisticated technology ever used in a commercial satellite system, GeoEye-1 offers unprecedented spatial resolution by simultaneously acquiring 0.41-meter panchromatic and 1.65-meter multispectral imagery. The detail and geospatial accuracy of GeoEye-1 imagery further expands applications for satellite imagery in every commercial and government market sector.

Ikonos

Ikonos, launched on September 24th 1999 and operated by GeoEye, was the world’s first one-meter resolution commercial satellite. Since its launch, Ikonos has collected more than 275 million square kilometers of imagery, worldwide. Ikonos provides multi-spectral imagery at a resolution of 4m and black & white (panchromatic) imagery at a resolution of 1m. Using pan-sharpening algorithms, multi-spectral imagery can be provided with1 m resolution.

The primary GeoEye products are:

  • Geo - Visual and interpretive analysis; temporal archive and new collection for change detection; surveillance; habitat monitoring;
  • GeoProfessional - Regional, large-area mapping; general GIS applications, base mapping, land use, economic development, real estate and insurance analysis
    High positional accuracy for urban applications
    Detailed urban analysis, cadastral and infrastructure mapping for transportation, infrastructure, and utilities planning; and
  • GeoStereo - DEM creation for flood plain analysis, engineering grade quality for transportation, infrastructure and utilities planning, and economic development.

Applications of GeoEye-1 and Ikonos include:

  • Cadastral Mapping.
  • Urban Spatial Planning and Mapping.
  • Land Cover / Land Use Mapping.
  • Environmental Monitoring.
  • Resource Management.
  • Emergency Preparedness.

These products are available at a range of resolutions from 0.5m to 4m. Detailled specifications of these three products and the two satellites are contained in the GeoEye Product Guide (PDF) .
