Hatfield has worked in Viet Nam since 1994 conducting Agent Orange dioxin contamination and mitigation. Working in close collaboration with Vietnamese Government agencies, Hatfield has implemented over nine projects in twenty provinces to determine the level of Agent Orange dioxin levels in soils, food items, human blood, and breast milk.
In September 2007, Hatfield completed the Da Nang Dioxin Assessment and Mitigation project, which investigated residual dioxin contamination on the Da Nang Airbase and developed mitigation measures to prevent the local population from future exposure. The resuts of this project were presented at the Dioxin 2007 Conference in Tokyo, Japan in September 2007.
Hatfield’s project experience in Viet Nam has resulted in the following key outcomes:
- Development of critical baseline data on the Agent Orange dioxin situation in Viet Nam.
- Development and implementation of policies, standards and guidelines within the Government of Viet Nam to deal with Agent Orange dioxin contamination.
- Development of mitigation plans to reduce human exposure to contaminants, particularly women and children.
- Training of Vietnamese professionals in pollution monitoring, environmental impact assessment, monitoring, and analytical chemistry.
- Development of alternative livelihood solutions for impacted communities.
- Awareness raising throughout Viet Nam and the international community about the Agent Orange issue.
Hatfield’s Agent Orange work has been funded by multiple donors, including the Canadian International Development Agency, Ford Foundation, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Environment Canada, Health Canada, the Canadian Space Agency, and in-kind support from numerous Vietnamese government agencies.
