Hatfield's Studies/Reports on Agent Orange in Viet Nam
- Development of Methodologies and Technology for Supporting Clearance of Landmines and Unexploded Ordnance in Viet Nam (Hatfield Consultants Ltd. and 10-80 Division 2003). Post-conflict areas of the world suffer from the ravages of war materiel that may remain a menace to human life long after the guns are silenced. Ecosystems necessary to support the economic framework of human settlements, are often severely damaged or obliterated by war. Communities in post-conflict areas continue to suffer the consequences of environmental degradation, and those wrought by the hidden dangers of landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and chemicals. Unexploded ordnance, landmines, and chemical contamination are insidious threats that create an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among local residents, which ultimately inhibits rehabilitation and agricultural/economic development of impacted lands. This project demonstrates the importance of integrating environmental considerations prior to remediation of war-impacted areas.
Reference: - Assessments of the Impacts of Agent Orange (Including Dioxin Contamination) in the Environment of Viet Nam (Hatfield Consultants Ltd. and 10-80 Committee 2000; Hatfield Consultants Ltd. and 10-80 Committee 1998). These series of projects have been undertaken by Hatfield and our Vietnamese partners (the 10-80 Committee) since 1994, and have resulted in 2 major publications: Development of Impact Mitigation Strategies Related to the Use of Agent Orange Herbicide in the Aluoi Valley, Viet Nam and Preliminary Assessment of Environmental Impacts Related to Spraying of Agent Orange Herbicide During the Viet Nam War. The results of these projects have helped improve knowledge and understanding related to the Agent Orange issue in Viet Nam, and also on a global scale. Hatfield Consultants Ltd. was awarded the 2000 Mark-Drake Award for International Cooperation (from CIDA and the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters Canada) as a result of these projects.
- Preliminary Assessment of Environmental Contamination in Gio Linh, Quang Tri, Central Viet Nam (Hatfield Consultants Ltd. 2000). Hatfield was contracted by the Danish Embassy to assess potential hazards to demining teams working in the former demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Central Viet Nam. Hatfield undertook an assessment of dioxin contamination in the environment in areas which were heavily contaminated with unexploded ordnance (UXO) and landmines, in order to prepare the land for re-settlement of villagers.
- Using RADARSAT Imagery to Assess Residual Environmental Effects of the Viet Nam War (1961-1975) (Hatfield Consultants Ltd. 1998). This project was funded under the RADARSAT User Development Program (RUDP), and was directly linked to our Agent Orange studies. Hatfield used RADARSAT and other remote sensing imagery to assess locations in South Viet Nam where Agent Orange and other herbicides were applied. The program was funded by the Canadian Space Agency.
- Capacity Building for Dioxin Analyses in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City Laboratories (Hatfield Consultants Ltd. 1998b). Hatfield assisted local Vietnamese laboratories improve their capabilities for analysis of dioxins and other toxic compounds in the Vietnamese environment.
- British Petroleum (BP) Oil and Gas Terminal Dioxin Soil Survey (Hatfield Consultants Ltd., 2001). Hatfield completed a contract to perform an assessment of residual dioxin contamination near BP's proposed Oil and Gas Terminal near Vung Tau, Mekong Delta, Viet Nam.
