General Description: Fish Biologists are responsible for organizing and implementing freshwater fish assessment and monitoring programs, including study design, statistical analysis and reporting; ensuring environmental compliance of project activities with all relevant provincial and federal environmental regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Participate in field programs to conduct, and direct research activities on fish health, physiology, and genetics.

Recommend and implement programs for population monitoring, habitat improvement, resource planning, and risk mitigation.
-
Perform statistical analyses and fieldwork for fishery projects.
-
Conduct assessments and reports on the impact of environmental changes, human activities, and harvesting practices on fish populations and habitats.
-
Provide consultation on fish protection to developers and engineers.
-
Prepare reports on researched results and present recommendations.

Other duties as assigned.
Competencies:

Experience in DFO Section 35 (2) Authorization requirements and preparing habitat compensation plans.

Have demonstrated project management skills.

Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation and analysis).

Problem solving skills (analyze a case or situation and recommending solution(s)).

Have excellent communication (verbal and written – technical or scientific writing).

Interpersonal skills – developing partnerships/networks with other stakeholders.

Intermediate computer skills (MS Office).
Education and/or Experience:
-
Must have a B.Sc. or higher degree in biological sciences and appropriate qualifications for work in either Alberta or BC.

Minimum 3 years experience or combination of experience/education.

Have experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork; and an ability/interest to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations.

Be familiar with the Alberta, British Columbia and Federal regulatory environments for construction projects.

Have appropriate Health and Safety certification and a current Drivers License.
